Life, sadly, isn’t always a walk in the park. Sometimes, bad things will happen to us, and often they happen when we least see them coming. When these bad things are particularly traumatic, they can lead to a lasting trauma that is always there looming over your life.

If that sounds all too familiar, then you’ll be happy to know that there are lots of things you can do to start overcoming your trauma and getting back more of you right now. Check them out below.

1. Don’t Bottle It Up

We might be known for our stiff upper lip, but there’s a lot to be said about letting it all out. Whether it’s a heart-to-heart with your mate or a passionate singalong to Adele’s latest hit, expressing your feelings is a surefire way to start healing.

2. Take the Time You Need

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is the recovery journey. And that’s perfectly okay. So, whether you’re back in the saddle in a few months or it takes you a tad longer, remember to be kind to yourself.

3. EMDR Therapy: Not Just Fancy Letters

If you’re thinking, “EM-what now?”, you’re not alone! EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It’s a type of therapy specifically designed to help people deal with traumatic memories. Fancy, right? If your traumas feel like they’re stuck on a never-ending playback loop in your noggin, EMDR might just be the remote control you’ve been looking for.

4. Surround Yourself with Positivity

Now, we’re not saying you need to channel your inner Mary Poppins (though a spoonful of sugar wouldn’t hurt!). But surrounding yourself with supportive mates, uplifting music, and perhaps even a cheeky rom-com binge can lift your spirits.

5. Establish a Routine

Remember when we’d moan about the “same old, same old”? Well, when overcoming trauma, routine can be a real rock. The predictability and structure can help bring a sense of normality back into your life.

6. Stay Active

No, you don’t have to suddenly become Mo Farah, but getting the blood pumping with some physical activity can work wonders. Whether it’s a jog around the block, yoga in the lounge, or just an energetic dance-off with your shadow, move that body!

7. Limit Stress

Yeah, easier said than done, right? But if you can, try to avoid unnecessary stress. Maybe it’s time to mute that WhatsApp group that’s more annoying than a broken kettle or reduce the news consumption for a bit.

8. Consider Joining a Support Group

There’s an old saying, “A problem shared is a problem halved.” Meeting others who’ve had similar experiences can be a balm for the soul. You’re not alone in this, and sometimes, just knowing that can make a world of difference.

9. Embrace Nature

The British countryside can be a right treat. Whether you’re in the serene Scottish Highlands, the breezy beaches of Brighton, or even the local park, taking in the beauty of nature can be a grounding experience.

10. Seek Professional Help

Last but by no means least, don’t be afraid to seek help. Whether it’s a therapist, counsellor, or another mental health professional, there are trained folks out there ready to give you a hand up.

Overcoming Trauma

Overcoming trauma is definitely not easy and it is definitely a process, but it can be done, and if you are ready to tackle your trauma, there is no better time now than to take that all-important first step. Good luck!
