Poor workplace health and safety practices can lead to disaster. After all, not only do they put your employees (or customers) in danger, but safety violations can quickly lead to business failure as a result of reputational damage. 

As such, if you are looking to enjoy long-term business success, you should make sure that your workplace safety procedures are up to scratch. Here are some simple strategies that you can use to achieve this goal. 

Pull together a list of trusted vendors

After all, this means that you can rest easy knowing that safety is guaranteed when using these products.

Refresh employee’s knowledge each year

While this is a great way to ensure that everyone shares the same basic understanding of health and safety and greatly reduces the chances of accidents happening, this is something that should be refreshed continually during their time at your company. As such, it’s generally advised that you offer top-up or refresher courses on an annual basis, especially if new equipment or tools are being introduced to the workplace.

Studies have found that since the introduction of the Safety Signs and Signals Regulations Act in 1996, “there has been a 50% reduction in the number of fatal injuries” in the workplace. This figure alone speaks to the importance of installing health and safety signage throughout the workplace, especially in warehouse environments or spaces where dangerous work is being carried out. 

Carry out regular risk assessments

Risk assessment provides you with a unique insight into the current state of your health and safety policies. This is because they can help you to identify any hazards that have gone unaddressed, such as tripping hazards caused by trailing wires. This knowledge means that you’re then able to quickly address these challenges, often eliminating them altogether. Ideally, you should carry out a risk assessment each year. 

Appoint a health and safety officer

Another way in which you can ensure that your work health and safety procedures are up to scratch is by appointing a health and safety officer. This way, they can dedicate a large amount of their time and energy to improving your health and safety procedures – which is time you may not have as a business owner. Furthermore, after receiving the proper training, it’s highly likely that they will have a more in-depth understanding of what good health and safety looks like than the average person.
