There are many reasons why you might need or want to move your business across from one place to another. It might be that you have spotted a better local opportunity somewhere else, or better rates. Or maybe you just want a change and you know that this could help spark something new for your company. Whatever the motivation might be, the actual act of moving your business across from one place to another can be quite full-on, and there is a lot that you will need to consider.

In this post, we’ll discuss the entire process of moving your business from one office to another, how you can make it work and what pitfalls you might need to be aware of along the way. You’ll hopefully discover that it can be made a lot easier and simpler than you might have thought.

Set Out A Game Plan

A good first move for something like this is always to set out some kind of a game plan that you can hope to work with. The clearer this plan is, the easier it is going to be to really be able to make it work for you. With the right kind of plan in place, you are going to find that moving your business is relatively easy and simple to do.

What should your plan include? Ideally, you will have a good sense of when the likely moving dates are, including the moving-out and the moving-in if they are different. You’ll want to know that you have deadlines for utility transfers, and when those are going to be. And you might want to start assigning tasks for specific team members – from labeling and packing to updating contacts and everything in between.

You should also think about when you’ll have to start booking in movers or vendors and anyone else who might be helping. The earlier you can set out this plan, the better, but it should hopefully be at least two to three months before the move date itself. That gives you plenty of chances to get ready, and to change things when something goes wrong – as is likely to happen at some point in this process.

Start Communicating With Your Team & Clients

It’s hugely important that everyone knows what is going on as soon as possible, and what is likely to happen. If you can start telling people about the move as early as possible, that is going to make it so much easier to be able to keep things running smoothly, and you’ll find that the whole process is therefore going to be a lot easier as well. First of all, you should make sure that you are telling your employees early on, because the change might mean that people have a change of work environments. That means that it’s only fair if they have time to prepare.

After you have told colleagues, you should notify clients, vendors, delivery services and anyone else that you work with, even if it’s only on an occasional basis. These are the kinds of people who are going to need to know if they are going to continue working with you effectively, and it’s important that you are keeping up with this as best as you can. You’ll need to send emails, update your website and Google business profile, and post signage at your current place of address well ahead of time. This can be especially important and effective if you are running a retail store, but really it’s true of any kind of business in more or less any setting.

Get On Top Of IT

The whole process of moving is not just about physical stuff, but also the digital side of things, and you’ll need to make sure that you are handling the IT like a pro. IT is actually often where moves fall apart, so you’ll want to make sure you have a good plan for dealing with it before the move. That means taking inventory of all equipment, backing everything up a couple of times at least just in case, and coordinating with your IT team to plan the setup at the new location.

That should help it go much more smoothly and should mean you run into fewer issues, but you might also want to schedule the internet installation in the new place – and as early as possible, because it can take a ridiculously long time. This is going to help a lot with reducing the stress of the move.

Consider A Phased Approach

Bear in mind that you don’t necessarily need to move every single item across straight away. It’s perfectly possible that you are able to get ahead with the minimal items from your old place, and then you can simply move things across over time as you see fit. This can help to reduce stress considerably, and you might find that it minimizes disruption to your business processes as well, which means less of a loss in income.

To facilitate this kind of phased approach, find some storage units in your local area and use those to keep things in the interim. Then you can gradually move the business over, keeping as much of it online as possible at any one time. That can be a very modern and effective way of doing things.

Hire Professional Movers

You may want to consider having some professional movers to help you out. That can make things quicker, easier and less stressful, so it can be a good option for a lot of businesses. On the other hand, it can also cost more, so you might need to think about whether it’s something you really need to do, or whether you are going to be able to do it alone. Either way, make your decision and stick to it, and you should find that this helps you to make the most of the move.

If you can do all that, your business move is going to be so much more successful on the whole.
