Whether you are on two wheels or four, the road is not just about knowing the rules. It is about having a good awareness of your driving and your surroundings, properly preparing yourself and your vehicle, building skills and adapting to different conditions. Road safety incorporates your ability to know, anticipate and respond to risks.

To help you stay safe on the road, here are some practical and modern road safety tips designed for all road users.

Understand the risks of today’s roads

Modern roads are a lot more complex and much busier than ever. With an increased number of vehicles on the road, more distractions to contend with and a different mix of vehicles on the road, drivers and riders must stay alert at all times. Car drivers can often underestimate how hard cyclists and motorbikes are to see, and motorbikes face a lot of vulnerability on the road with less protection than cars. Understanding that there are shared risks on the road can help you to be more aware and have more respect for others on the road.

Road safety for car drivers

Car safety begins with attention, but also predictability. When you learn to always check your mirrors and shoulders, signal early, maintain safe following distances and double-check spaces, you can reduce risks on the road. Another critical factor in driving a car is speed management. Many accidents don’t just happen from speed alone, but because the speed is inappropriate for the weather conditions. Mobile phones are a huge issue at the moment, and should always be put away. Other distractions too, like eating and in-care screens, also create a risk.

Motorcycle safety

For motorbike riders, visibility is survival. It always starts with bright and reflective gear, before you even get on the road. Use headlights, even during the day and ensure that you are not just aware, but position yourself clearly in traffic. These initial activities can help to significantly reduce accident risks. The way you ride will play a role in road safety. Ensure that you are aware of hazards like car doors opening or potholes, and learn how to brake smoothly and corner properly. It is a shame to say, but defensive riding can help you be more reactive to anything that may cause a risk. All the appropriate gear is essential.

Preparation

All vehicles, whether a motorbike or a car, should be regularly checked over before any length of journey. Check your tyres for wear and tear, test your brakes for any faults and ensure all your lights work properly.

Motorbike insurance and car insurance won’t prevent an accident, but it is important to have them in case there is an accident. It plays a vital role in peace of mind and recovery. Even if you don’t cause the accident, there may be a big financial issue if an accident does occur. Insurance helps to encourage responsible behaviour.

Regardless of how you travel, staying safe on the road means having a good awareness, staying informed and learning to adapt to different conditions.
