Having your big kitchen renovation is finally finished is such a relief. When the builders are gone (and youve swept up the last bit of dust that somehow found its way into the toaster and the sugar bowl). Youve got shiny new countertops and cupboards that actually close when you push them instead of hanging open like they did for the last ten years! It looks fantastic, but it probably looks a bit like a sterile showroom right now instead of a normal place where you actually live. Getting the structural stuff right is great but it really comes down to the final touches to make the space yours.

More lighting

You probably spent time choosing the perfect spotlights and dining table fitting for your renovation. But go a step further, under cabinet lights are the absolute easiest way to trick people into thinking youve got your life completely figured out. Ideally this will be fitted before your builders have left and fitted by an electrician, but there are battery powered options too which work really well. It really takes a kitchen renovation to the next level and looks expensive and ultra cool

Bits and bobs

A lot of people tend to ruin the clean look of their nice new surfaces immediately by putting a massive ugly plastic dish drainer right next to the sink or a cheap utensils pot filled with mismatched spatulas on the side. Youve just spent a ridiculous amount of money so you should probably hide the hideous green dish soap bottle and put the soap in a nice glass pump dispenser instead or invest in some new pieces to contain what you need. Add a small trailing plant by the window, if you know youll probably forget to water it then Ikea have tons of great faux varieties that look the part without the hassle. Hanging some nice art on the empty wall and throwing down a washable vintage style rug makes it feel lived in. Theyre simple additions but they stop the room feeling so stark. Put up a shelf for your cookbooks, even if you only ever use one recipe from them they’re a great kitchen decor feature. Just make sure the space works for you and feels like home.

Hardware and handles

Maybe you kept the basic handles your builder supplied because you were so tired of making decisions about grout colours and plumbing fixtures. If you’re now looking at your finished kitchen and think you could have done better then swapping out standard boring silver knobs for some heavy unlacquered brass handles or matte black pulls takes about twenty minutes and totally changes the whole vibe of the room. It adds actual character to a space,
