Words. Finding the right ones can be…Well, we don’t all have the gift of the gab! For that reason, there are freelance copywriters. You could hire someone from anywhere in the world – but if you run a Welsh business, why not hire a copywriter in Wales?
Whether you’ve got a website that needs the right content to get the message across or you’re looking for someone to write engaging social media posts that tap into your brand vision, a Welsh copywriter can help.
Copywriters are an elusive breed. They often work freelance and hide in front rooms and coffee shops, silently penning masterful copy that resonates —hidden from the world. So, how do you find the best person for the job?
Here are some tips on finding a copywriter in South Wales.
Table of Contents
Avoid the Content Mills
Search “copywriter UK”, “content writer UK”, or “copywriter Wales”, and you’ll probably find ads for writing services at the top of the results pages. Great. Surely they’ll do?
Companies with big marketing budgets often leapfrog the organic results by buying ads. The exact ad you’ll see will depend on their current spending habit. But you’re most likely to see agencies at the top. So, what’s wrong with that?
Typically, there’ll be several content packages on offer —all at seemingly reasonable prices.
Not naming any names, but on my freelancing journey, I thought I’d hone my teeth at some of these agencies. They’re often referred to as content mills. Agencies like this vary in size but can have a few hundred freelance writers on their books – all chomping at the bit to gain professional experience and pay the bills!
Don’t get me wrong; you might find a good writer in these places. But it’s literally like a roulette.
You’ll start by filling in an order form. The information you provide becomes the writer’s brief. This brief is typically…well, brief.
Your order then goes into the system where it’ll either be randomly assigned to a writer who may have no knowledge or experience writing in your niche, or it might go onto a job board where the writer with the fastest fingers picks it up.
Either way, you’re not guaranteed to get great content. Most importantly, you’ll also never deal directly with the writer. Some agencies have better feedback channels for discussing rewrites, but ultimately, your content won’t improve that much. After all, you can’t polish a turd.
Some content mills have QC teams. Some don’t. Again, you take your chances because you just won’t know how much care and attention go into the copy you’re paying for.
Turnaround times are worryingly fast with this type of agency. Content mills usually ask that their writers complete a task within 24 hours. But because the pay is so low for the writers working through these agencies, there’s no danger of it taking longer because they need to work fast to cram in as much writing as possible.
One UK-based content writing service pays its writers just £7 for crapping out a 500-word article. To put this in perspective, the UK minimum wage is currently £9.18 per hour. Some agencies pay less than this.
Avoid the Freelance Sites
So, you’ve ruled out that gleaming marketing agency offering a great deal on bulk content orders. What next?
Next in the search results will be the Freelance marketplaces. These include the likes of Upwork, Fiverr, Guru, Freelancer, and more.
Here, you can talk directly with the person writing your content. A step up. Also, writers can set their rates based on their worth.
You’re more likely to get a good writer here than in the content mills. But again, there are issues.
Sites like these take a huge cut of the writer’s payment. After all, they’re providing the platform and the marketing muscle. Only fair?
The best case scenario is that you end up paying over the odds for a freelance writer that would have charged you less if you found them elsewhere.
But these sites are global marketplaces. A UK writer will be up against someone in a country with lower living costs. Reduced overheads mean that there’s often a race to the bottom in terms of prices. But can you guarantee that your low-cost copy even scans well?
Deal Directly With a Copywriter in Wales
So, after ruling out the freelance platforms and content mills from your Google search for “copywriter in Wales”, you’ll find the Welsh content writers with their own sites. Like this one.
Again, you take your chances working with anyone you don’t know. But, you don’t have to hire them straight away. You can always email them to start a conversation (my email address is [email protected] – drop me a message, I’m friendly, and I usually reply quickly!).
Alternatively, you can phone up to discuss your project. (My number is 07703414422).
You won’t find a bulk content offer dangling on my website. You won’t even see my rates. Why? Because every customer has different needs. You’re not just paying for my words. You’ll also pay for my research, planning, and rewriting time.
“But wait!!” I hear you say, “all those places you told me not to visit aren’t charging for all these things; why should I pay you for them?”
That’s because writing isn’t just sitting in front of a computer typing away until the page is full of words.
Writing means understanding why someone needs the product or service you’re offering. A good content writer puts themselves in your customer’s shoes, finds their pain points, and then works out how to put what you’re offering across in simple terms.
A good copywriter won’t rush the job to jump on to their next task. Professional writers stand by the content they create, even if there’s no byline.
The best copywriters in the UK also know that their content can help businesses make a lot of money. If you value what a content writer can do for you, they’ll ensure the work they do for you sizzles.
Therefore, my rates are negotiable and vary depending on what you need. Call or email me to discuss what I can do for you.
