So, you’ve fallen in love with a property and want to put your unique stamp on things. People improve their houses for a number of reasons. The first, and most common, is that they want to create a living space that’s both functional and comfortable for their family.

As a handy side effect, home improvements will also boost the value of your home, so if you need to sell or remortgage your property, you will get a better deal.

But we’re not talking about earning money. We’re talking about creating a living space that perfectly reflects your personality. Here are some tips for making your living space your own.

Pick a Theme

The first thing you need to do before you even pick up a paintbrush is to pick a theme or style for your home. Do you like traditional designs? Or do you prefer modern, minimalist designs? Do you love eccentric designs that seem as though nothing goes together?

Picking a theme doesn’t mean you must abandon creativity and design a home that looks exactly the same as other houses with that style. There are no rules. But a theme can be helpful as it guides you and can give you ideas.

Believe it or not, narrowing the field can foster creativity, as you aren’t stuck in a state of indecision. But if you find something you love, you can find a place for it in your home.

Find Signature Pieces

The best way to make a room unique is by discovering signature pieces of art, ornamentation, and furniture that you fall in love with. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done.

A good way to find pieces like this is by exploring antique stores, charity shops, and even online marketplaces like eBay. More often than not, you won’t find anything, but you can make some great discoveries if you keep an eye out for them.

Another option is to find a small, local business that deals in this kind of thing. If you love art, look for an artist that you like. The same applies to furniture. Sometimes you can even commission a design.

This is more pricey, but you can end up with a beautiful, handmade piece that will outlast anything mass-produced. Even better, you’re supporting someone who needs it.

Switch Out the Ceiling

A common decorating tip is to update the flooring and the walls. These are great tips, but you’ve heard them all before.

Why not look up?

Your ceiling might not have an obvious effect on your room as the walls and floors, but it can add so much character. Wooden ceilings, for example, can look as modern or as traditional as you’d like. They can also have other effects, like improving the acoustic quality of the room, which is amazing if you play instruments.

Another option is to install a skylight. Natural light is by far the most flattering and pleasant source of light, and a skylight can bathe your home in the stuff.

Creating YOUR Unique Living Space

The trick isn’t to just think about the unique. Focus on design choices you love, and a personal, unique style will stem from that.
