It seems true that if they could, most people would prefer not to work and instead only invest in their creative pursuits or bonding with their loved ones. However, that’s not always the case. It does feel good to work even if the immediate results aren’t necessarily obvious. You can ask any gardening lover that.
However, how our workplaces are structured often defines how our staff really feel about our offices. Now, while you can’t run your company like a relaxed social club where everyone just works for a little while, hangs out, enjoys free food and coffee, and then returns home, you can certainly invest in tangible methods to make them love working for you. This way, your staff turnover plummets and you get the best of their creative energies willingly.
It also helps you avoid platitudes that try to convince your staff they’re having a wonderful time, such as referring to the team as a “family” or anything else that might seem a little out of touch. With that in mind, please consider some of the following advice:
Care About Their Health
A workplace that takes care of staff health tends to feel warmer and more inviting for obvious reasons because we’re all human before we’re professionals. For example, investing in ergonomic office furniture and a bike-to-work scheme, while also providing light refreshments and good coffee and tea can be a good place to start. You might also work out discounted gym memberships with a local service or make use of nearby businesses with similar provisions. Your design decisions matter as well because a room filled with plants, soft colors, or gentle sounds can help create an atmosphere where work feels less like a chore. Also, embracing remote work really does matter.
Sort Access & Parking
There’s nothing that tires out staff more than having to deal with a morning battle in where to park or how to arrive. When access is sorted and parking arrangements are clear, the day can begin with a touch less stress. It’s good to put in place a neat plan that guides vehicles and clarifies entry routes, especially for staff, and if you need to work with local providers such as a car multi-storey, that can be worthwhile. Your staff are likely to appreciate knowing that the little logistics have been looked after.
Develop Reward Schemes
It’s fair to say that while you do have a fair compensatory scheme in place, recognizing effort in genuine ways lifts morale and reinforces that each contribution matters. Instead of a one-size-fits-all bonus that only applies to certain worker levels, you could consider rewards that echo the unique character of the work being done. It might be as simple as an extra break, a small gift, or a raffle that is enjoyed every festive season. Rewards schemes shouldn’t feel like a carrot that convinces them to work harder but a fun part of the workplace that allows staff to feel engaged. Investing in their careers can function this way also, with educational courses often ranking at the highest spot for preference.
With this advice, you’re certain to ensure your staff adore working for you.
