Every business has to go through a product development cycle in order to actually release their product. It would be impossible to guarantee value for money otherwise, especially as a smaller brand already asking customers to take a chance on them.

Hitting the right stages in this cycle, ensuring you’ve ironed out all the kinks, and then slapping a price on top is the best way to start making a profit. But there are some big product development issues that every business runs into at some point or another.

Identifying these as early into this cycle as possible is key; here are three of the most common for you to read up on.

Not Enough Testing

The testing stage of product development can not be skipped, no matter how tempted you might be to simply run a couple of in-house tests and be done with it. You need a proper product testing team on your side, and to invest in your quality assurance before heading onto any further stages.

Test as much as you can while you’re in this stage. There’s a variety of reasons as to why a low quality, poorly working product should never hit the shelves, including poor reviews, no word of mouth, and potentially even liability lawsuits. But in the long run, it just means you haven’t done your job properly.

Lack of Quality Manufacturing

Finding the right manufacturer is a crucial element in the product development cycle. You need to know you’re working with a factory capable of creating your product to the high standard that’ll ensure it impresses customers and performs well against competitors

Materials are another sore spot here. You could be working with the most efficient manufacturer in the world, but the final product will still be shoddy if it’s made from poor quality materials. You need to pick and choose your material supplier very carefully, no matter what product you’re bringing to the market.

A company involved in precision part production should work with suppliers like Avocet Precision Metals to secure some high quality steel strips to make automobiles or medical tech. Likewise, a company turning out their own furniture line should invest in strong, sturdy, and workable wood material that enhances their overall brand perception.

Running Out of Budget

Track your product development spending at every stage. You need to know exactly where your funding has gone and how much of it has been allocated that way.

Not only does this help you to pace the budget you’re working with, but it’ll be important data to have if you need to secure further funding investment. You need to be able to tell your investors where their funds are being spent and why, and what you expect the expense to result in.

Going through product development is extremely common in the business world, but it can also be extremely problematic. Get ahead of the issues above by using the best practices we’ve included in the issues above.
